Your rights as a photographer

Posted in Photography, Photojournalism by Ward Larson on June 28, 2009

This is a well written article on photographer’s rights. As a photographer and photojournalist (especially) it’s incredibly important to know how far the first amendment allows you to dive into your subject matter, and at what point your rights are not covered by the constitution of the USA.

Ken Block Gymkhana II – The infomercial

Posted in Uncategorized by Ward Larson on June 27, 2009

I’ve embedded it here, but I recommend watching the high definition version here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQ7R_buZPSo

This is some intense driving by rally driver Ken Block. He’s driving a 566hp Subaru Impreza and he’s making it his bitch. Special appearances by Rob Dyrdek. If you aren’t familiar with Block, search youtube for some of his other videos, such as this Gymkhana demo vid and this 171 foot jump of a Subaru Impreza WRC.

Zoom into a wisdom tooth

Posted in Science, Video by Ward Larson on June 25, 2009

This video shows a wisdom tooth of a 20 year old man, and zooms continuously until reaching the atomic level. This is insane!

This Romanian short film made me laugh. It’s cute and funny, and most of all true.

The Marlboro Marine – Luis Sinco

Posted in Photography, Photojournalism, Video by Ward Larson on June 21, 2009

In this photo essay, Los Angeles Times photographer Luis Sinco tells the story behind his famous “Marlboro Marine” photo which he took of Marine Lance Corporal James Blake Miller in Fallujah, Iraq in November of 2004.

I attended a journalism convention in Anaheim, Calif. in April of 2008 in which Luis Sinco was the keynote speaker. I felt like this photo and the story of the man behind it is probably the most profound conduit of my anti-war sentiments that I have yet found, and also a gut-wrenching reality check to the way that vets are treated after their service has ended.

I was delighted to have found this on the internet because since the conference in April of 2008, I hadn’t seen this photo essay.

Burn by Nine Inch Nails – Filmed live with a Canon 5dMkII

Posted in Music, Video by Ward Larson on June 21, 2009

This video showcases the Canon 5dMkII’s amazing ability to capture full high defininition video. It’s also cool if you like NIN at all or just like seeing what happens on stage at a concert up close and personal. They’re playing at Festival Hall in Melbourne, Australia on February 25, 2009.

Carousel by Maxime Caron

Posted in Video by Ward Larson on June 21, 2009

“Created by Tribal DDB and Stink Digital, this new interactive campaign promotes Philips’ latest entrant into the television market, the CINEMA 21:9. Since the television’s 21:9 frame lends itself so readily to film, Tribal DDB, Amsterdam commissioned us to create a piece of filmed content that could hold its own with Hollywood’s best. Director Adam Berg responded with an idea for an epic ‘frozen moment’ cops and robbers shootout sequence that included clowns, explosions, a decimated hospital, and plenty of broken glass and bullet casings.”

This video is mindblowingly surreal. I think the best way to explain it is to call it “Fucking Awesome!”

Steve Aoki – Remix king

Posted in Dance, Music by Ward Larson on June 21, 2009

I first heard Steve Aoki’s remix of Bloc Party’s Helicopter a month or so ago on myspace. I quickly fell in love with it and still listen to it almost daily. Aoki has some pretty sick remixes on his MySpace page.

Steve Aoki has established his own record label called Dim Mak Records in 1996 which has signed such artists as Bloc Party and MSTRKRFT.

Aoki also has a clothing endorsement in Kr3w Apparel, as well as a shoe endorsement with Supra footwear and a headphone endorsement with WeSC, a headwear endorsement with Neff Headwear and a software endorsement with New Zealand-based audio research group Serato.

Check out Aoki’s blog here.
